Weight loss and fat reduction through exercise can be hard for many people. Fortunately, there are treatments for fat removal that can help you lose significant amounts of weight to reach your aesthetic goals. At MKE Aesthetics & Wellness in Wauwatosa, WI, we know that power-assisted liposuction is an ideal way to remove fat and get the body of your dreams.

Power-Assisted Liposuction

Power-assisted liposuction is an advanced surgical technique that uses a special vibrating cannula to simultaneously break up unwanted fat tissue and remove fat from targeted areas of the body. Like other forms of fat reduction surgery, this method can remove significant amounts of unwanted fat at one time, allowing you to achieve your aesthetic goals more quickly than traditional methods.

Typically, this procedure is ideal for people who have moderate amounts of unwanted fat on large areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, buttocks, and thighs. This procedure is often used by people who are overweight as determined by BMI measurements. You can expect to lose up to 10 pounds of unwanted fat during a single procedure.

How Does This Procedure Work To Remove Fat?

This procedure works by literally removing unwanted fat from the body. The cannula used for this procedure will rapidly vibrate to break up tumescent tissue, and then suction will be applied to remove the fat cells from the body. Usually, you can expect this procedure to take at least one to two hours, or sometimes less if you are only using this procedure on smaller areas of unwanted fat.

Are You Sedated During the Procedure?

This procedure can be performed under tumescent anesthesia or full sedation, depending on your preferences. Tumescent anesthesia is a type of local anesthesia that simultaneously numbs the treatment area and prepares fatty tissue for removal. For procedures to remove a small to moderate amount of unwanted fat, tumescent anesthesia can be a good option.

Full sedation is an option that is most appropriate for patients who have anxiety about the procedure, as well as patients who have a significant amount of unwanted fat. For example, if your goal is to remove the maximum amount of unwanted fat at once, then full sedation is likely the best option for you. We will discuss your sedation options during your consultation.

What Should You Do Before Treatment?

About one week before your procedure, you may need to stop using blood-thinning supplements and medications, unless otherwise directed by your primary care physician and surgeon. You may need to complete certain labs to prepare for your procedure.

On the day of your procedure, you will need to limit food and water intake based on the type of sedation you are using. For example, full sedation means you will need to fast for at least 10 to 12 hours before your procedure. Be sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing and follow all the preparation instructions you are given.

What Should You Do After Treatment?

It’s crucial to follow your aftercare instructions closely during the first 24 hours after your procedure. For example, you will need to remain in an upright seated or standing position for at least six to eight hours after your procedure for proper drainage of your surgical site. After this period of time, you are allowed to lay down and sleep comfortably.

You will need to avoid strenuous activity for the first three to five days after your procedure. Intense cardiovascular exercise and heavy lifting of more than five pounds is prohibited. However, you should continue to move around during the day, such as with light walking, to keep your blood circulation healthy.

Incision Care

During the first 24 hours after your procedure, you will need to keep your incisions covered and dry. The day after your surgery, you will be able to remove your bandage and wash your incisions carefully with warm water and soap. After cleansing your incisions, you should apply a layer of Vaseline and a bandage over the stitches. This routine should be repeated once daily until your follow-up appointment.

Compression Garments

You will be directed to wear compression garments for at least 20 to 24 hours a day for the first two weeks after your procedure. Compression garments are essential to speed up your healing process and ensure your body contours into your desired shape. After the first two weeks, you will be able to wean off your compression garment usage to 12 hours a day for four weeks or until otherwise directed.

How Can You Maintain Your Results?

Usually, the results of this treatment will last for a lifetime because fat cells that are removed from the body cannot grow back. That said, it’s still important to avoid weight gain. It’s a good idea to adopt a healthy diet and regular exercise routine, as well as avoid lifestyle habits like alcohol consumption and sedentary activities that will make it easier to gain weight in the future.

What Are the Benefits of This Procedure?

Surgical fat removal is often an ideal option for people who are unable to lose unwanted fat through diet and exercise alone. For some, factors such as hormones and genetics can make it impossible to lose weight. Other benefits of this procedure include:

Fat Removal

Although there is a limit of removing 10 pounds of fat per surgery, this procedure can be used for total unwanted fat removal. If you are interested in using this surgery to remove large amounts of unwanted fat, please discuss the possibility of multiple procedures with your surgeon.

Fat Reduction

This procedure is mainly used for fat reduction of localized areas that are not responsive to traditional diet and exercise. Reducing moderate amounts of fat can help you realize all of your aesthetic goals, including your body contouring goals. Fat reduction can be applied to virtually all areas of the body.

Weight Loss

If you are at the end of your weight loss journey, but you are struggling to lose those last few pounds, this surgery can be a valuable tool to help you achieve your body goals. As a form of surgical weight loss, you will be able to shed several pounds, fit into clothing better, and feel more confident.

Consider Power-Assisted Liposuction

Surgical procedures to remove unwanted fat are good options for those who have hit a plateau in losing weight with traditional diet and exercise. A consultation will determine whether this procedure is a good option for your health and aesthetic goals. Your procedure will be performed at a state of the art outpatient surgery center.
